Travel to and on Barra

To travel to the Isle of Barra there are two options, by ferry and by plane. 

Airport

Ferry

The island is accessible by the Sound of Barra Ferry from the Isle of Eriskay which is linked to South Uist by a causeway. Calmac operate a small vehicle ferry on the 40-minute crossing between Eriskay and Barra. There are several sailings every day throughout the year. There are also sailings from Oban to Castlebay  which takes roughly 4 1/2 hours. For more information on Caledonian MacBrayne routes, timetables and fares click here.

Buses

Buses run regularly from the ferry terminal to Castlebay, click here for the bus timetable.  There is also a Postbus service which will transfer passengers between the airport and Castlebay and other places on the island.
